Full-Day Kaş to Kekova Boat Trip: Swim the Sunken City and Visit Simena Village

Set off from Kaş for an 8–9 hour coastal voyage to Kekova: swim in crystalline bays, pass the submerged ruins of a Lycian town, and step ashore at car-free Simena village. This full-day boat trip mixes clear-water swims, local mezes, and guided history between limestone cliffs.

The Experience

Before You Go

Bring a snorkel and mask

Visibility is excellent at most stops—having your own snorkel and mask ensures a comfortable fit and clearer views of underwater ruins.

Wear reef shoes

Rocky landings and seabeds with pebble or rock require shoes that protect feet when entering and exiting the water.

Sun protection on deck

Sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and a lightweight long sleeve will keep you comfortable during long exposures between swims.

Cash for small purchases

Simena and some vendors accept only cash for souvenirs, coffees, or additional snacks ashore.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Small stairways off Simena’s main landing lead to quiet terraces with uninterrupted sea views
  • A tiny sea cave near Aşırlı island (the so-called "pirate cave") offers instant shade and a great photo backdrop during stops

Wildlife

  • Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) are occasionally sighted in these waters
  • Mediterranean grouper and colorful damselfish around rocky outcrops

Conservation Note

The Kekova area is a protected marine zone—visitors are asked not to collect artifacts, anchor on seagrass beds, or leave waste; operators follow designated stopping areas to limit impact.

This stretch of coast is dotted with Lycian and Byzantine remains; rising and falling sea levels left parts of ancient settlements submerged, which you pass by boat.

Photographer's Notes

Best times:Golden hour (late afternoon at Simena), Late morning for water clarity, Midday for saturated sea color
Key viewpoints:
  • From the boat when passing the sunken ruins (use a polarizing filter)
  • The castle ramparts of Simena for panoramic shots
  • Gökkaya Bay shore for close-up water-and-lunch scenes
Subjects to capture:Underwater ruins and snorkeling shots, Coastal cliffs and castle silhouettes, Candid portraits of village life and market stalls

What to Bring

Snorkel mask and snorkelEssential

Personal mask fits better than rental gear and maximizes time spent viewing underwater ruins.

Reef/water shoesEssential

Protects feet when entering rocky coves and walking on village paths without pavements.

Light waterproof jacket

Spring mornings or offshore breezes can be cool; a thin shell blocks wind and spray.

High-SPF sunscreen and lip balmEssential

Long exposure on deck needs reliable sun protection for face and lips.

Meet opposite the Kaş post office (PTT). The operator provides a land transfer to Üçağız where the boat departs.

Can I snorkel over the sunken city?

You cannot swim directly over the designated sunken city zone during the guided pass-by, but nearby bays offer excellent snorkeling over submerged ruins and marine life.

Is lunch provided and are there dietary options?

Yes—an open buffet lunch with local mezes and grilled chicken is included; notify the operator of dietary restrictions in advance so they can accommodate where possible.

Is this trip suitable for children and non-swimmers?

The tour welcomes families; infants travel on laps and non-swimmers can remain on board or use life jackets, but supervision is required during swim stops.

What happens if weather is bad?

The operator may cancel for bad weather—full refunds are available if cancelled at least 24 hours before departure or if the operator cancels due to conditions.
