Molokini Crater Two‑Site Snorkel Adventure from Kihei: Molokini & South Maui Turtle Towns

Molokini Crater Two‑Site Snorkel Adventure from Kihei: Molokini & South Maui Turtle Towns

Board a small boat from Kihei for a three-hour, two-site snorkel that pairs Molokini’s crystal-clear crater basin with South Maui’s Turtle Towns. Small groups, experienced guides, and early-morning calm make this a top choice for close-up reef viewing and underwater photography.

The Experience

Before You Go

Book the earliest departure

Morning trips usually have the calmest water and best underwater visibility; plan to be at Kihei Boat Ramp by 6:15 a.m.

Use reef-safe sunscreen

Apply a mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen before boarding and reapply with a shirt to minimize sunscreen entering the water.

Bring motion-sickness prevention

If you get queasy, take medication or use acupressure bands before boarding—the short ride can still be bumpy if trades are active.

Provide sizing information early

Email your age, height, weight and shoe size as requested to ensure correctly fitted fins and masks and a comfortable gear setup.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • La Perouse Bay lava coastline—good post-trip shore walks and unexpected tidepool life
  • South Maui Turtle Towns—less crowded sites where turtles regularly graze seagrass beds

Wildlife

  • Green sea turtle (honu)
  • White-tip reef shark

Conservation Note

Molokini is part of managed marine areas with strict rules to limit contact, control anchoring and minimize impacts—visitors are asked to use reef-safe sunscreen and follow no-touch policies.

Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic tuff cone formed by explosive interactions between lava and seawater; the basin’s protected slopes create ideal reef habitat that has long attracted fishers and, today, scientists and snorkelers.

Photographer's Notes

Best times:Early morning (calm water and best visibility), Midday for maximum light penetration, Golden hour for boat-and-crater silhouettes
Key viewpoints:
  • From the boat near Molokini’s inner basin rim
  • While floating above the quarry-like slopes inside the crater
  • Along the boat’s second stop in South Maui Turtle Towns
Subjects to capture:Underwater reef and schooling fish, Sea turtles grazing on seagrass, Boat silhouette against the crater rim

What to Bring

Reef-safe sunscreenEssential

Protects skin and the reef—apply before boarding and bring a small bottle for reapplication.

Mask and snorkel (or rent onboard)Essential

A well-fitting mask keeps water out and improves visibility; bring your own if you prefer a custom fit.

Rash guard or thin wetsuit top

Adds sun protection and keeps you comfortable during cooler mornings or longer swims.

Small dry bag and towel

Keeps phone, wallet and extra layers dry between swims and comforts you on return to shore.

Common Questions

Is Molokini guaranteed on every trip?

No—visits are weather-and-condition dependent. If Molokini is unsafe due to sea state, operators substitute South Maui sites and notify guests in advance when possible.

Are beginners welcome?

Yes—beginners are welcome if they have basic swimming ability; guides place people into groups based on experience and provide instruction before entering the water.

What marine life can I expect to see?

Common sightings include green sea turtles (honu), white-tip reef sharks, manta rays on rare occasions, and a variety of tropical reef fish—always observe but do not touch or feed wildlife.

What should I bring to the meeting point?

Bring your printed or mobile ticket, swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a light jacket, and any medication; you will also need to have provided age, height, weight and shoe size for gear fitting.

Can I bring a camera or goPro?

Yes—compact underwater cameras and GoPros are encouraged; secure housings and floating grips help prevent accidental loss in open water.

Are there health restrictions?

This trip is not recommended for those with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or serious cardiovascular conditions; guests should have moderate fitness and be able to follow crew safety instructions.
