The Experience

Before You Go

Wear a swimsuit under your clothes

Change quickly at the park and avoid wasting time—swim first, dry off on the boat.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen

Sunscreen that’s safe for coral is required by guides and reduces harm to reef ecosystems.

Close-toed shoes for the bike

Sturdy sneakers protect during the 5-mile downhill which has intermittent gravel shoulders.

Hydrate before and during the trip

Carry a refillable bottle—heat and exertion on the downhill and on-deck sun exposure can dehydrate quickly.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Manoa Lookout viewpoint—great photo stop with fewer crowds than popular mirrors
  • Kewalo Basin seating area—watch local outrigger crews practice at dawn

Wildlife

  • Reef fish like parrotfish and surgeonfish
  • Frigatebirds and occasional spinner dolphins offshore

Conservation Note

Operators emphasize reef-safe sunscreen and no-touch snorkeling to protect coral; sticking to marked swim areas reduces reef damage.

Tantalus and Punchbowl areas sit atop volcanic tuff and are threaded with WWII and 19th-century Hawaiian history; guides often reference traditional place names and local stories.
