The Experience

Before You Go

Start early or late

Temperatures climb fast; schedule the park stops for morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat and harsh light.

Bring 2–3 liters of water

Even short walks over slickrock require extra hydration in the desert; bottled water is provided but carry an extra bottle for hikes.

Sturdy shoes for slickrock

Closed-toe shoes with good traction help on sloping sandstone and sandy washes — flip-flops are not suitable.

Respect rock art

Do not touch or climb near petroglyphs—oils from skin degrade ancient markings and are protected by law.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Checkpoint at the east-facing Rainbow Vista for sunrise colors
  • Short scramble near White Domes that reveals hidden petroglyph panels (stay on established routes)

Wildlife

  • Desert bighorn sheep
  • Chuckwalla and side-blotched lizards

Conservation Note

Valley of Fire is ecologically sensitive; visitors should stay on trails, avoid removing rocks, and pack out all trash to protect fragile desert soils and archaeological sites.

The park contains petroglyphs and evidence of Indigenous presence and was designated Nevada’s first state park in 1935 to protect distinctive sandstone formations.
