The Experience

Before You Go

Start early or late

Begin the hike outside peak hours to avoid crowds at the Wineglass Bay Lookout and catch the best light for photos.

Layer for wind and sun

Coastal weather shifts rapidly—bring a light windproof layer and sun protection even on mild days.

Hydrate for Mt Amos

If attempting Mt Amos, carry at least 2–3 liters of water and salty snacks; the climb is steep and exposed.

Respect marine areas

Don't harvest shellfish or disturb farm racks; stick to marked paths to protect fragile coastal vegetation.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Walk the shorter Mt Graham track for quieter coastal views away from the lookout crowds
  • Small tidal pools on the eastern side of Honeymoon Bay reveal colorful sea stars at low tide

Wildlife

  • white-bellied sea eagle
  • forested wallabies

Conservation Note

Freycinet faces pressure from visitor numbers and marine farming—stay on tracks, respect farm boundaries, and carry out all waste to minimize impact.

European sealers and later oyster farmers shaped the coastal economy; Indigenous Tasmanian people have long cultural ties to these waters and headlands.

Common Questions

How long is the Wineglass Bay Lookout hike?

The lookout route is roughly 3.2 km round-trip with about 200 m of elevation gain; plan 40–60 minutes depending on pace and stops.

Is Mt Amos suitable for beginners?

Mt Amos is challenging—expect steep sections, rock scrambling and 3–4 hours round-trip. It’s best for experienced hikers with good footwear and a head for heights.

Can I swim at Honeymoon Bay year-round?

You can swim year-round but the water is cold outside summer; check conditions and avoid entering the water on rough or windy days.

Are park entry fees included?

The tour includes a National Parks Pass as part of its inclusions; confirm with the operator at booking.

Is there food available in the park?

Facilities are limited—Freycinet Marine Farm and local Coles Bay eateries serve seafood and snacks, but bring your own provisions for longer hikes.

How much walking is optional on the day trip?

You can tailor the day: a short lookout walk and boardwalk is low-effort, while adding Mt Amos converts the day into a full moderate-to-hard hiking day.
